Pathway

Rooted in Volleyball Canada’s Long-Term Development (LTD) model, we are committed to guiding athletes through a pathway that supports sustainable growth, passion for the sport, and life-long engagement in volleyball.

Athlete-Centered, Growth-Focused, Holistic Approach

Our programs are designed around the LTD principles, meaning we focus on age-appropriate, stage-based development that respects each athlete’s unique journey. We meet athletes where they are, physically, mentally, and emotionally, helping them build a strong foundation before prioritizing results. Your journey with LVC prioritizes process and fundamentally believes that instead of being the goal, winning is the result of doing the right things consistently, with purpose and integrity.

  • Technique and technical training of development-appropriate skills
  • Physical literacy and fundamental movement skills
  • Progressive development of tactical skills and game IQ
  • Emphasis on teamwork, communication, and character
  • A balanced, mentally and physically healthy training environment
  • A safe, inclusive, and fun atmosphere that keeps athletes engaged and motivated

Trusting the Process

At LVC, we understand that true progress takes time and we teach our athletes that patience and consistency are key. We help athletes learn to embrace challenges, reflect on setbacks, and take pride in steady improvement, both as players and as people. Get used to making errors, if you aren’t making mistakes, you’re not progressing!

We encourage athletes to build the habits and mindset that lead to long-term success, on and off the court.

Why It Matters

By focusing on the whole athlete, London Volleyball Club creates players who are not only technically skilled, but also resilient, confident, and respectful. Whether they continue in the sport recreationally, or aspire to compete at the highest level, our athletes leave LVC with a solid foundation for life.

Guided by Evidence, Delivered with Passion

Our coaching staff is heavily supported by our Management Committee (Technical Directors and Coach Developer) which mandates the integration of the LTD principles into fundamental practice, stays current with best practices in sport science and athlete development, and commits to coach training above and beyond the required levels set by the Ontario Volleyball Association (OVA). The Management Committee has built a club-wide pathway and club technical teaching referents, and update them every season, to ensure the best pathway for athletes through their club career at LVC, regardless of their starting point, their team level, or their coaching staff.

Deeply committed to their own development, coaches consistently update their education and skillset through the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) and very regularly engage with the club’s Management Committee to best connect their specific teams and athletes to the club-wide pathway and improve their own practice.

Don’t be fooled, know who you are hiring! You can view the details of each registered coach in Canada by entering their NCCP number and surname into the NCCP Public Database. Find our coaching staff’s NCCP numbers on our coaching staff webpage, and even better, peruse the coach biographies to learn more about them as coaches and awesome human beings.

Whether athletes are in the Learn to Train or Train to Compete stage, as part of the LVC Family everyone follows a structured, supportive, and scientifically informed pathway.

Boys Teams

Gender
As LVC’s competitive teams are integrated in the Ontario Volleyball Association’s (OVA) competitive structure, all teams are gendered in a binary way – either girls or boys. The exception can include 4v4 Rallyball teams being co-ed. Note that based on OVA policies, an athlete is able to (and by LVC values, is encouraged to) participate on any team in which best represents the gender they actively identify with. Find your pathway to love this game, whoever you are!

Age
Age remains a simple way to help organize youth into like-skilled groups. Although there are significant ranges of physical abilities and sport-specific skills within those groups, it is helpful to sort athletes by age, at minimum, during the preliminary stages of evaluation. However, age becomes significantly less helpful in organizing athletes at the younger ages, especially in a late-developing sport like volleyball. As such, all Early Contact Initiative teams–4v4 Rallyball, 6v6 Rallyball, and Traditional Less-Specialized (TLS) Volleyball–have extended age ranges to help athletes play on a team that best suits their current development. As the OVA does not allow age-identifiers in club team names, LVC has created a set list of team names to represent all groups each year, connected by the first letter of each name. For example, the 15u Girls teams are named London Fire Wild and London Fire Wrath.

Level
LVC sets out team requirements for system decisions, such as running 6-3 systems at TLS level and the serve receive format, as well as play time baselines, where athletes are guaranteed a set proportion of competition play time (across the season, not tournament specific) assuming the athlete expectations outlined in the club and team codes of conduct are met, such as training attendance and effort.
